The much-ballyhooed Reston Metro Silver Line, opened in late-July, is projected to reach 25,000 “boardings” in its first year. After two months, it has already hit 60% of that number, 15,000 boardings. This equates to approximately 30,000 trips from the five new Metro Line stations per week day.
But an interesting anecdote may speak to employment trends. On week day mornings: 1) ten percent of the riders entering a new Silver Line station eventually exit in Maryland; 2) an estimated 17 percent of riders exiting in one of the five new stations began their trip in Maryland. A substantially larger number of Maryland residents are working in Tysons Corner or Reston compared to the reverse.
With five new Silver Line stations, more than half the entry and exit traffic is in Reston’s Wiehle Avenue station. Where do the people taking Metro from Reston go? Here are the top five exit points for those who entered in Reston:
1) Farragut West
2) McPherson Square
4) Foggy Bottom
5) Metro Center
It is difficult to say exactly how many riders switched from the previous Orange Line trains on the same routes. But Metro is estimating 6,000 new riders added every week day to the rail system since the Reston Silver Line extension was added.
The above is gathered in large part from a report cited in the Reston Patch.
